There will always be an element of risk involved when using an electrical product. As a key player in the rapidly evolving EV charging industry, it is our responsibility to closely monitor any potential risks related to our products and be transparent about our findings.

With more than 700,000 chargers installed throughout Europe, there will inevitably be situations where our products are involved in incidents. In these cases, we do everything we can to identify the root cause and ensure they can be avoided — both by us and others.

We recognise that we are not alone in this field and should work together to share our experiences to prevent similar events from reoccurring in the future.

All Easee products undergo rigorous testing in our lab

Built to Last

Failure rates of electrical products will typically be highest in the early and late stages of the product lifecycle. For Easee chargers, the failure rate in the early stages – where we would expect more malfunctions – is low. This is a good indication of the reliability of the product.

Since we launched our first charger, we have collected considerable amounts of data, which has proven invaluable to identify potential weaknesses and maximize our product’s lifespan.

We must, however, acknowledge that electrical products will inevitably fail due to wear and tear over time. When this happens, it is equally important to ensure it does not pose any risk. Our chargers are therefore equipped to make sure if something fails, no harm will be done to people, animals, and property.

“The number of faults tend to be higher in the early and late stages in the life cycle of electrical products. Since all Easee chargers are in the early stage of their life cycle, the fault percentage is expected to be higher than normal.

Still, the actual numbers are relatively low overall compared to similar equipment, especially when considering the product’s stage in the life cycle. As the faults are also including errors originating from the fixed installation and terminations, the number of actual charger faults are even lower than the numbers shown.”

  • The bathtub curve shows that the failure rate of products decreases in early life, is low and stable in useful life, and increases at wearout. Easee updates potentially exending life.

Fault distribution

Out of 700,000 installed units, we registered 3075 errors preventing the charger from optimal operation during 2023.

Temperature deviations (1739) Pluss

Temperature sensors play a critical role in preventing overheating. If potential overheating is detected, charging may be derated or stopped altogether. Easee is proactive by continuously monitoring and responding to temperature changes during charging.

In 2023, 76,000 instances of high-temperature detection led to reduced output current. Usually, the temporary derating will go unnoticed by the user. In 1739 cases, the high temperature persisted, shutting down the charger and alerting the user.

Relay malfunctions (440) Pluss

A large current (10kA) may lead to the welding of one or more relays (for humans: electronically operated power switches ). During 2023, a total of 440 chargers suffered from welded contacts. When the chargers are used according to the manual and the requirements in IEC 61851-1, the risk is eliminated.

If a relay remains closed when it should be open, the system enters into a non-operating state and warns the user with a visual and audible alarm. Despite these rare occurrences, Easee chargers maintain numerous safety features, comparable to larger socket outlets, ensuring minimal risk, especially with ongoing error warnings.

RCD test fail (376) Pluss

Easee chargers offer an advanced safety feature compared to manual RCD testing, allowing for automatic self-testing rather than periodic manual checks. This safety measure forces and increases the test frequency, resulting in a safer product for users.

These self-tests for RCD functionality are performed after power-on, disconnection of an EV, or at least once every 24 hours. If the RCD fails the self-test, the charger will enter into safe mode and alert the user via the app and the charger itself.

In 2023, Easee’s failure rate for its internal RCD unit was 0,05% (376 out of 704 676), which is far lower than the typical manually tested RCD units.

Other (520) Pluss

Cases where chargers were not able to operate as expected due to unforeseen incidents, like incorrect installation or damage during transportation, amounted to 520 in 2023.
