No sales ban in Norway will take place until the ESV appeal has been settled
The Norwegian regulatory body, Nkom, has today issued a statement and finalised its report on the chargers Easee Home and Easee Charge.
Last updated: 14.06.2023
Nkom will not object to Elsäkerhetsverket’s decision. However, there will be no immediate sales ban in Norway.
– We have prepared for this and respect the decision. We will continue the dialogue with Nkom and learn from this. Our process with documentation has not been good enough and we will go through our routines with support from external experts before we launch any new products, says CEO Jonas Helmikstøl.
Nkom will await the conclusion in the court case in Sweden, where Forvaltningsdomstolen in Karlstad will settle the case between Easee and ESV. This is expected to be finalized at the earliest this fall. There will be no sales ban in Norway before this is settled, neither will there be any other restrictions to our operations.
For those who have an Easee charger installed, Nkom’s conclusion will have no impact. No restrictions have been placed on the use of existing products.
– All our customers can continue to charge as the products are safe to use. Safety and innovation have been the main focus areas at Easee since the very beginning, and we would never allow anyone to charge with an unsafe product, says CEO Jonas Helmikstøl.
The products will continue to be updated – the app, cloud solution and connectivity will function exactly as before.
Easee will continue to challenge and innovate – to make the best and safest solutions available for customers. A new product is just around the corner:
– We are working on the expansion of our product portfolio and will be launching a new charger on the market very soon. This conclusion, the further dialogue with Nkom and support from external experts will help us making sure that everything is a hundred percent with the documentation. We have been through some challenging months as a company and we have learned a lot, says Chief Product Officer, Ola Njå Bertelsen.

Nkom do not oppose ESVs sales ban on Easee Home and Easee charge. What does that mean for Norwegian customers?
Nkom does not oppose ESVs conclusion for Easee Home and Easee Charge. However, there will be no immediate sales ban in Norway. Nkom will await the conclusion in the court case in Sweden, where Forvaltningsdomstolen in Karlstad will settle the case between Easee and ESV. This is expected to be finalized at the earliest this fall. There will be no sales ban in Norway before this is settled, neither will there be any other impediments to our operations.
Nkoms conclusion does not affect already installed chargers. Nkom have, in their own risk assessment, concluded that the chargers are still safe to use.
We have been in close dialogue with Nkom, and have experienced this dialogue as constructive. Even though we disagree, we respect their decision. We have documentation from world leading independent and accredited test laboratories which supports the safety of our chargers. Safety is our highest priority at Easee, and we would never let anyone charge with an unsafe product. Nkoms own risk assessment also indicates that further measures are not deemed necessary for already installed chargers.
We acknowledge that we have not had sufficient technical documentation in place at the time when the products were marketed and launched.

I have an Easee charger at home. What do I need to do?
Nkoms conclusion does not affect already installed chargers. Nkom have, in their own risk assessment, concluded that the chargers are still safe to use.
The charging experience will not be affected in any way. The products will still be updated, and the Easee app, cloud solutions and other tools will continue to function just like before.

Does this have any impact on operations in the rest of the EU? Will there be imposed an immediate EU-sales ban?
As of now, all operations in the EU will continue as normal. Our chargers are available for sales as normal everywhere, except the Netherlands, who have chosen to follow Sweden’s sales ban and Austria where we discontinued the sales on our own accord.
We withhold that our chargers are completely safe and that all our customers can charge safely. We would never allow anyone to charge with an unsafe product.
-
Remaining EU-countries have had 90 days to review whether they will follow Sweden’s decision of imposing a sales ban, or start their own process. How do you expect this to go now?
In the media and elsewhere it has been reported that if no other authorities object ESV’s decision, a sales ban will be automatically enforced in all EU and EEA countries. That seems to be inaccurate. Due to the ongoing appeal process in Sweden, it is now up to each country themselves to decide how to handle this. We are now in dialog with different Authorities to get even more clarity.
It is important to emphasise that ESVs sales ban only applies to Easee Home and Easee Charge. Within a short period of time, we will announce the first product in a new generation of Easee chargers.
-
Does Nkom consider Easee’s already installed chargers as safe, or will there be a prohibition of use?
Nkoms conclusion does not affect already installed chargers. Nkom have, in their own risk assessment, concluded that the chargers are still safe to use. Already installed units can continue being used as normal. Safety and innovation has always been our focus at Easee, and we would never allow customers to charge with an unsafe product.
The charging experience will not be affected in any way. The products will still be updated, and the Easee app, cloud solutions and other tools will continue to function just like before.

What can you tell us about user safety?
The safety of our products is and always has been our top priority. We have rigorous testing and quality control processes in place to ensure that our products meet or exceed all relevant safety standards, and the products have been through extensive testing by world leading independent and accredited test laboratories such as TÜV SÜD.
With the help of our cloud solutions, we also get a steady stream of data after installation, to be able to quickly identify any improvement needs.
We will continue to monitor our products closely and make any necessary updates or modifications to ensure their ongoing safety and reliability. To date, more than half a million Easee chargers have been installed, and we have data from more than 60 million charging sessions.
-
What is the financial impact of Nkom’s decision?
This will impact the sales of the Easee Home and Charge and our financial situation, but we are confident in our people, products and innovation. We have taken several measures to improve our financial robustness over the past months, including cost reduction measures as well as a capital raising process. We are also working on new products that are to be announced within short time.
