Electrifying Discussions: Are electric vehicles boring?
If you’re new to the world of electric vehicles, you might have heard the rumour floating around that EV’s are boring to drive. But that’s not actually true…..is it? In this week’s episode of Electrifying Discussions, we look at some common misconceptions to see if we can change some minds.
So why do people say that EV’s are boring?
Electric vehicles are too slow
Mention the words ‘electric vehicle’, and for some it immediately conjures the thought of old, slow vehicles with a very limited range. But this couldn’t be further from the truth.
In fact, thanks to their instant torque and readily available power, electric cars are incredibly speedy and downright fun to drive. If you have the budget for it, performance levels like the Tesla Model S can accelerate from 0-60mph in just 2 seconds flat!
And it’s not just the premium models that deliver this kind of power. Thanks to their handling and speed, the more affordable models like the Nissan Leaf or Renault Zoe are also great at making the performance ICE models seem sluggish.
You’ll spend all your time waiting for them to charge
It’s true that it takes longer to charge an electric car than it does to fill up an ICE vehicle, but that doesn’t mean you have to spend hours waiting at a charging station.
If you have an EV charger installed at home, you can simply plug your vehicle in overnight and let it charge while you sleep. You may also be able to be able to take advantage of cheaper off-peak electricity prices and you’ll be putting less strain on the grid. For those that need to rely solely on public chargers, sites like Zap-Map can help you locate your nearest public charger so you can plan accordingly. And remember, you only need to charge your battery to 80%!

They’re too quiet
Since they don’t have the mechanical valves, gears or fans of traditional combustion engines, electric vehicles are much quieter than their ICE counterparts. While some people might miss the noise of an engine rev, the benefit is that noise pollution will decrease and help to make cities more peaceful and enjoyable places to be. Studies have also shown that a quieter drive = less stress. Surely this can only be a positive thing?
Naturally there is the argument that having a vehicle that emits no noise is a safety hazard. If you’re concerned, you may be encouraged to learn that there are regulations that require vehicles to produce a sound when they are reversing or driving below 20km/h. This ensures that EVs are safe for everyone.
So are EVs boring? Well, overall it’s going to come down to a matter of taste. In our opinion, with their sleek designs and the exciting driving experience, we think that EVs are a great choice for anyone that wants to make a positive impact on the environment while still enjoying the thrill of the open road.
